Thessaloniki Grand-Prix 2013 6th round

Three players lead the event with 4 points out of 6 – Dominguez,Kamsky and Caruana. Dominguez had very good chances for a win practically for the whole game and even the Q endgame was not without chances (tablebases show wins easily, but it is difficult to find such moves during the game. Moves often just don’t make any sense!). Kamsky and Caruana won against Svidler and Bacrot respectively. Also the surprise of the round was the loss of Ivanchuk against Ponomariov as the game ended as early as move 19 with Black losing first a pawn and then much more!

GM Dominguez won the 3rd game in a row and enjoys the lead with 3.5 points out of 5 games. Five players are behind with 3 points. His game was the only decisive in the 5th round but don’t let the draws deceive you :), they were all very interesting!

The 4th round was marked by interesting games and lots of missed chances! The surprise of the round was perhaps the miniature played between Topalov and Ivanchuk (21 moves). At first it looked like Black was fine and indeed he was, but then Ivanchuk decided not to castle and this is when Topalov made some very strong and nice moves and forced Black to resign due to huge material loss!
