The World Chess Candidates Tournament – London 2013 4th round

The 4th round was again very interesting! Carlsen got a pleasant position with white against Grischuk, and kept on pressing until Black did a couple of inaccuracies (17…f5 and 18…Qg6). Then, Black got into time pressure and lost. Aronian drew Svidler, who played fast and got a very easy game for a pawn, admitting later that he had a rest day thanks to his preparation :). Kramnik got a good position with Black against Radjabov but in the end had to agree to a draw as he didn’t manage to breakthrough. Ivanchuk played the Chigorin Defense against Gelfand and offered many sacrifices until a perpetual check was found :).

So, Carlsen and Aronian share 1st-2nd with 3 points and Svidler is 3rd with 2.5.

There were three decisive games yesterday! Aronian won against Ivanchuk who lost on time, Svidler got a very familiar position against Radjabov and won a nice game, not allowing any counterplay. Carlsen won against Gelfand in an interesting endgame where white shouldn’t have exchanged the queens. Grischuk drew Kramnik in a Gruenfeld game.

Aronian is leading the event with 2.5 out of 3, Svidler and Carlsen are on 2.

Today is a rest day!

Two games were decisive today and two were drawn. Aronian got a very pleasant position, won a pawn but 25…Rc8 shocked everyone. After 26.Bh6!! the game is lost. Ivanchuk transposed into a Leningrad Dutch but got a passive position without proper development quickly. In the time pressure both he and Radjabov played very interestingly and Black probably could have tried 33…g4 but it is nearly impossible to spot it having just seconds on the clock!

All 4 games were drawn. Kramnik played quite a risky move order as you will see from the games and in Ivanchuk-Grischuk game white played 20.Bf1 novelty with 20.Qd4 being the main line. Carlsen didn’t have too many problems on the way to equality and Gelfand’s approach didn’t promise him much as well.

The second round starts at 14.00 local time today.
